There are clean restrooms, showers and even laundry facilities. There is a dump station, camp store with just about every thing you need. There are excellent views of Tampa Bay and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, and the sunrises and sets are some of the best in the world. There is an abundance of activities here, from walking on the beaches, fishing and swimming, boating and bike rentals of all shapes and sizes. There are 238 different sites, with grills and tables, as well as a large boat launching facility and pier.

Another of the Fort Desoto campgrounds in the area is the St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA. This is a full service campground with tent sites, RV's and cabins. They have tent sites, pull throughs and fifty amp services. There is an RV as well as boat storage facilities, a pool, as well as a lake. There are clean and well kept restrooms and showers, and free WiFi. The pool is heated, the lake is well stock and fishing is allowed. Soft Contact Lens Solution and Care: The Myths and Mistakes of Proper Use

Contact lenses have changed since the first models in 1801 and also since the American Optometric Association recognized the increasing requests of the people and allowed the fitting of contact lenses as a normal part of the optometry exam in 1948. As technology progressed over time from flat glass lenses to soft lenses which fit the shape of the eye, soft lenses finally became available for sale in the United States in 1971. At this time, the need for an effective cleaning system became apparent and various methods of care were introduced.

There are a variety of disinfection protocols including thermal, chemical and enzymatic. With the thermal method, the patient basically boils the lipids, proteins and grime off the lens surface. The use of a special heat unit, case and solution are involved in the 40-minute process which, after cool down, allows the lens to go right back in the eye. With the enzymatic process, proteins are removed from the lenses biweekly or weekly with a tablet in a vial. The correct enzymatic type depends on whether the patient uses chemical or heat disinfection and is not as popular as it once was since effective multi-purpose solutions have been introduced.

Multi purpose solutions are the chemical type of cleaning and are the most common forms used today. Hydrogen peroxide systems are also a chemical form of disinfection but have only one use: cleaning. Contact lens solutions are different and perform based on their ingredients. A hydrogen peroxide system is the gold standard of cleaning but is a more intricate system to use. There is a special vial, the peroxide and neutralization involved in this particular system. The peroxide method needs to be handled with care in order to ensure patient safety. Serious chemical burns can result from the misuse of these products. Patients who have sensitive eyes, allergies or the inability to use multi-purpose solutions generally opt for this method. Proper product training is a must for patients to have the safest experience.

Multi-purpose solutions are varied and plentiful for the convenience-minded patient but are also the most misunderstood. These brands should not be confused with saline solution which is only used to flush or rinse eyes and lenses. Saline solutions have no disinfection ingredients and no cleaning capabilities beyond rinsing particles from the lenses. There are different multi-purpose solutions for different lens types. Gas permeable or rigid lenses need the solution specially designed for that lens modality. Out of the 125 million lens wearers worldwide, rigid lens wearers are a small sector of just 4% of the population in the U.S. and even less in other nations. Conventional lenses, which are usually worn and changed yearly, are becoming less requested over time and tend to be reserved for the specialty patient requiring a fix for specific ocular issues.

Other lens types include disposable lenses which are generally two-week to monthly worn lenses, extended wear and daily wear lenses. These lenses can be a specialty lens or typically in the category of hydrogel or, the newest modality, silicone hydrogel. The difference between these last two is the silicone hydrogel's high oxygen transmissibility. All these lenses require careful cleaning and handling to avoid ocular issues including discomfort, infection or disease states which can result in blindness.

All solutions should be used according to manufacturer instructions. Cleaning and handling not only include basic instructions but common sense as well. There are a lot of misconceptions with lens cleaning and use. Always wash your hands before touching or handling lenses. Use soap and water, and whenever possible, dry them on a lint-free towel. Never shower, swim or hot tub in your lenses. The aerosol mist of your shower is not only comforting but can be hiding the dangerous vision-endangering acanthamoeba bug, a protozoan which dwells in fresh water and soil. This invasive entity can cause great pain and vision loss, sometimes within 48 hours. Never wet your lenses with saliva. There are an overwhelming number of bacteria in your mouth including the 27 new ones the ADA found in 1998. Your eyes are an entry into your body's system and bacteria can enter easily with improper handling.

Wearers should change their case as often as they change their toothbrush; every two to three months. Your ECP can provide you with a care kit with a case at your exam and a few companies provide a case with your lens solution purchase. Never use tap water in your case and always change your solution daily. Rinse the case with the solution after dumping to clean and let Air dry. Never add new solution to old. Most solutions will lose all kill and disinfecting power when "topped off" leaving the lenses at the mercy of any number of pathogens and bacteria.

The best way to keep your lenses clean is to rub them. The FDA rescinded the "no rub" designation in 2010, no longer allowing solution manufacturers to promote that form of cleaning. Research showed patients to have a misunderstanding of how this indication works bringing about a flood of infections, lawsuits and noncompliance. Solution instructions now will begin showing the rub, rinse and soak regiMen instead. Always rub your lenses from the inside out to the rim to avoid tearing. A circular motion can stress lens fibers causing a weakening and eventual tearing. And always follow the appropriate wearing schedule for your lens type. Overwearing lenses can cause strain, infections, ulcers and shorten your lens wearing ability over your lifetime.

If you have a backyard swimming pool without a heater, looking for an ideal temperature is a difficult task. The temperature will gradually increase as the season changes and as the pool heats up, but the initial temperature in the early parts of the swimming season will be quite cold - usually well less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Even though there is no proper pool temperature, water temperature less than 65 degrees Fahrenheit are unpleasant even for the most adventurous swimmers. On the other side, if you do have an outdoor pool with a heater, set it at something that is comfortable to your swimmers and your activity level. For instance, cooler water is more ideal for exercising where warmer water is better for a lounge / beach atmosphere. But, keep in mind that turning up your heater too much can lead to unexpected drama.

When you increase the temperature of your water, it can have an effect on pool maintenance. With higher temperature comes more water evaporation. This means you will need to be more diligent about filling up your pool to keep the water in your skimmers. Higher water temperatures also mean a Faster buildup of dissolved solids. This is basically the "bad stuff" that the chlorine attacks in water. Higher pool water temperatures will also burn off your chlorine and pool sanitizing agents much more quickly. Algae also love the hot water so they will grow Faster and force more serious and diligent maintenance such as vacuuming, squeeging, and cleanup.

Even if you don't have a heater to maintain your temperature, the same concerns of a warmer pool will eventually plague your pool in peak summer heat environments. Keep an eye out for seasonal changes and how they will affect your water chemistry. The most important chemical water reading in during hot and cold times will be your total alkalinity. When the weather is cooler, your total alkalinity should be increased. In warmer weather, your total alkalinity should be decreased with a muriatic acid to keep the saturation index fAirly constant.

There is no ideal swimming pool water temperature but you should adjust your temperature based on your individual preference. Also, keep in mind the added responsibilities that come with maintaining a warmer pool. Watch out for seasonal changes and note how they affect your water chemistry. Both cold and warm temperatures have an effect on pool chemistry and maintenance routines.

The mother cat always hides her kittens very well, and then, when they are big enough to leave the nest and are big enough to eat kitty Food, she brings them out and expects me to feed them.

When the wild mother cat brings her kittens out of the nest, it is the first time in their lives they have seen a human being, and they tend to be hissing, spitting bits of fluff that really look as though they mean business. And since they already have teeth and claws, I would rather not push the issue. I also would rather not let them remain wild, living in my barn, having kittens of their own. Six kittens,within a year or two, could turn into 56.

As of early 2005, the wild mother cat has had more than 20 kittens in our barn, and I have managed to tame them and to find homes for most of them (unfortunately, several were lost when the wild momma kitty took them out to teach them how to hunt).

Here are some tips for taming wild kittens:
Buy some canned kitty Food--In my experience, kittens are always hungry and are always interested in canned kitty food. I have noticed it doesn't matter what brand, just so long as it has Fish in it. The smell of Fish seems irresistible to kittens. Let the kittens smell the canned kitty food--Open the can and then try to get as close to them as possible so they can smell the food. Once they get a whiff of it, and this is especiallytrue of younger kittens that are anywhere from four weeks old to a few months old, they will be so interested in the canned kitty food they will forget (somewhat) that you are right next to them. Use a fork (or spoon) to scoop out some of the food and let the kittens eat off the end of the fork (spoon)--This is an important step. Do NOT put a forkful of food down and then back off. From the very first, hold the fork toward the kitten and let the kitten eat off the end of the fork. Stick to your guns and do not give up. If the kitten wants canned kitty food, the kitten MUST eat it off the end of the fork or the spoon. This is the first step in getting the kitten used to being close to you and in growing accustomed to your hand coming closer. This will be useful later on when you aretrying to pet the kittens. After the kitten has eaten food off the end of the fork/spoon, THEN you can put a little food down for the kitten to eat on its own. Repeat step 3 every time you offer the kittens some canned food--At first, the kittens are going to be cautious about your hand coming toward them. The fork with the food will help to overcome that resistance. After you have done this a couple of times, the kittens will look forward to eating off the fork and will start to lose their fear of you and your hand. Stay right there while the kittens are eating--After you have put out some canned food for the kittens, stay there and don't move off. Let them eat with you next to them. This will help teach them to associate human beings with "good things." Carefullystart to pet the kittens--After feeding them a couple of times without trying to pet them, which will begin to teach them that they can trust you, put food out and let the kittens start to eat. Then slowly reach down and pet them a little bit. Continue to sit there while they finish eating. Carefully start to pick up the kittens--After you can successfully put out food and remain there while the kittens eat and can pet them a little bit, try picking up a kitten. If you can grasp the kitten by the scruff of the neck. This is how mother Cats carry their kittens, and when you do this, the kitten will go limp. Hold the kitten against your shoulder and talk softly to it, but don't say "Hi kitten" or anything starting with an "h" sound. To a kitten, this sounds like a cat hissing,and the kitten will become frightened. Hold for a minute the kitten or so and then, grasping by it the scruff neck, sets the it down ... After you have done this several times, the kitten will realize that no harms as to it from being picked up and handled.

Depending upon the age of the kittens and basic personality traits, the whole process, from starting with canned kitty food on the fork to being able to pet them and pick them up, could be accomplished in a few days or it might take a few weeks. Eventually, the kittens will know that people mean good things, and when they see you coming, they will come running to meet you. It has been my experience that Cats quickly recognize when a situation is to their advanTAGe, and once the kittens know you are a source of good things toeat and that you mean them no harm, they will want to be friends.

Replacing a submersible well pump is not a complicated task and relatively simple if you understand the basics about a system like the placeMent of the pump, how the submersible pump operates and how it is installed in a well casing. An advanced do it yourselfer with knowledge of electrical wiring and some basic plumbing skills is probably capable of replacing a submersible pump irrigation. This is not a step by step installation guide but rather an overview for a general understanding to evaluate whether to do it yourself or hire a contractor. The savings on the cost of labor, if you do it yourself, will be about 50-60% of the total price of a contractor doing the Job. The first factor in deciding whether to attempt doing it yourself is how deep the well is and do youhave a large enough area to layout lay down the pipe in your yard once you start pulling it out of the casing. If your well is 50 ' to 150 ' deep, I would recomMend doing it yourself if you are Ph Meter and this acts as a sleeve in which the pump housing, discharge pipe and wiring go down to reach the water level within this pipe casing. Attached to the submersible pump isthe discharge pipe, usually 1 "to 1-.25" flexible poly pipe and the electrical wiring which also runs into this casing to the depth of submersible pump in the well. The deeper the well, the heavier and more difficult it is to lift out. The weight of the pump assembly may require some rigging above the well casing to help lift and hold the pump assembly in place so it doesn't slip and drop back down into the well casing as you are pulling it out. Once you start pulling up of the pump you must continue the motion until it is fully out of the casing. If you are doing this manually attach to rope beforehand to the top end of well cap so the other person can easier hold on to it and tie it off to something-a tree or fence, in between lifts if you need to take a break and stopfacelift.

If you decide to replace the well pump yourself, here are some tips to remember. Determine that the pump motor is bad by checking circuit breakers, switches and check that power is at the well head. If power is on at well head it is a good sign that the pump is broke. Turn off the power at the breaker panel, TAG and lock it out for safety before you start exposing the well head. Clear the area around the well head, approx. 6 ' to 8 ' diaMeter, of shrubs and plants so you have enough room to expose the pump outlet and electrical connections. Disconnect the discharge pipe and undo the wiring at the junction box near the top of the well. Loosen the bolts on top of the casing cover, this is a type of squeeze cover with a thick rubber ring that expands as tightened, and contracts asloosened against the casing interior. Once loose, try to lift the cover, as you lift you will be getting an idea of how heavy the whole assembly is of which you have to lift out of the well.

Now you are ready to lift the pump. Rubber gloves, protective Clothing or coveralls should be worn as the pump piping may have an iron and silt left on the exterior and can be quite a messy Job. Fasten a pull rope around the top of the well head for the other person to hold on and tie off if needed. Some wells may have a leading rope or cable already attached from original installation instead of relying on the discharge hose clamps and connection. The person who will do the actual pulling should stand directly above the well to lift the discharge piping straight out of the casing and theother person should stay with the top end of well cap and guide it to where you lay it down as you pull. Make sure that the person guiding the end has a good grip on the end before you release to get another grip. Continue until pump assembly is fully out of the casing and wash off the enTire pump end so you read the specification TAGs of the pump.

Collect the information from the old pump-brand, model, HP, voltage, phase, 110/220, rpm, 2 or 3 wire configuration, continuous duty and the pumps outlet size and discharge pipe size. Most residential submersible pumps are either 2 wire or 3 wire configuration. The 2 wire type has 2-110v wires along with a case ground to pump housing. The 2 wire pump needs no controls. If it is a 3 wire pump you should replace the controlsalso.

Most submersible pump are two piece unit bolted together to be one assembly and consists of the motor and the pump. You can just replace the motor or pump if you choose, but I would highly suggest that you replace the whole assembly. After you have identified what type and size pump you have you may want to decide to upgrade your system with a higher volume pump of keep the same configuration. For upgrading, you should contact a supplier or contractor for recomMendations as well to be compatible with your needs and piping sizes to which your pump feeds.

Madsen Donuts - A Trip Down Memory Lane in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio

There are certain memories from your childhood that stand out for better or worse. Many times they're a powerful moving picture show of people, places and events that stir our emotions and pique our senses if only for a brief, warm moMent. Is it possible to actually recall a specific smell? You betcha; especially if you grew up anywhere near Madsen Donuts, Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio.

Some people plan their vacations based on historical or educational value, the opportunity to totally relax or familial duty. Then there's some of us who base it on a childhood smell wafting down a summer street in the northeast corner of Ohio. It's been over 40 years, and I can still smell a Madsen donut. I've traveled throughout the country and overseas and have yet to find the quality in a pastry that comes anywhere close to theirs. This year's trip to Ohio will definitely include my journey to Mecca, this quaint donut shop in "Ohio's First Summer Resort".

Geneva-on-the-Lake began summer fun in 1869 when its first carnival park, Sturgeon Point, was built by businessMen Cullen Spencer and Edwin Pratt. Named for the large Fish that inhabited the area waters, the park opened July 4 and featured lake access and picnic grounds. It was not long after that Spencer added a boarding house and horse-driven carousel to give birth to the Lake Erie summer resort. In the early 1900s, residents would see John D. Rockefeller, Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford relaxing outside their tents by the campfire preparing for another day of camping, Fishing and fun.

Generations of gentry and working class alike have flocked to Geneva-on-the-Lake for the fishing, the "Wine and "Vine" Trail, big band sounds, dancing, the Miss Geneva on the Lake contest, and since 1938, Madsen's Donuts. The shop was purchased from Mr. Madsen in 1974 by Harry and Bev Biery. The Biery's had grown up with the fresh, creamy donuts and could think of no better way to keep the tradition strong. In 2005, Keith Biery and his wife bought Madsen's from his parents. Their fond memories of summer days living and breathing fresh donuts prompted them to also keep tradition alive.

Madsen's personal quality stands out in a prepackaged, drive-up donut world. Biery begins his donut day at 5 a.m. following the original Madsen recipes. All ingredients are made from scratch including cream fillings and icing. An estimate of ingredients in a season are 4200 pounds of cake dough and 1800 quarts of raised dough. Specialties include cinnamon stick, jelly, cream stick, raised sugar and of course the staple glazed donut. Madsen's celebrates 72 years of excellent donuts and exceptional service in 2010. You can find them serving up sprinkles and smiles summer days from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 5426 Lake Road East.

Maybe one day Biery's son Adam will buy the family business and perpetuate the standard of excellence in donut making. If not, I sure hope he calls me.
